Updates to sort function? Changelog page updates.

Were there any updates to the sort function recently? I checked the changelog page, but it hasn't been updated since 2023.

When I sort a player's parallels in a card set, sorting by card number use to alphabetize the parallels. Now it doesn't. I'm not sure how it sorts, if at all, but now I have to switch to alphabetical sort to sort the parallels, when it was sorted by card number from my original set search.

My search process is this.

  • Sport
    • brand
      • set (sorted by card number) *search card number*
        • *right click_new tab*
          • *view parallels sorted in alphabetical order*
            • find parallel to price>*right click_new tab*
              • view prices

But now the parallels are not in order when sorting by card number. You have to manually switch to alphabetical. Example: https://www.sportscardspro.com/console/basketball-cards-2023-panini-hoops-premium-stock?sort=model-number&model-number=118&rookies-only=false&exclude-variants=false&show-images=true&in-collection=

The parallels use to sort alphabetically when sorting by card number. Now they do not.

So was this a recent change that broke the sort, or did it fix the sort that was broken? lol

I'm also open to suggestions on better ways to search card prices. I feel like it's just a tedious process and is what it is. But I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks for the question.  Yes there was a recent change to sort by card number.  We will sort in this order:

Card Number > Base Card > Print Run.

Alphabetical is the tie breaker for all of these.  So cards with no print run will be sorted alphabetically.  But we are sorting a /299 card above a /1 card because users are much more likely to have the /299 than the /1.

Users had told us that it was hard to find the cards that they have because there are so many  variants.  Users we talked to, traffic data, and collection data show that users are more likely to own/visit the base and common cards vs the uncommon ones.

I hope that makes sense.  Let me know if you have any feedback or questions.

Thanks for the response. The answer does make sense. Just so I can understand a little better, I have some follow-up questions and thoughts.

I think that system is fine if users are searching for parallels by print run rather than parallel name. If that were the case, then I'd be an advocate for adding a filter by print run, rather than parallel name. I have personally never looked for a specific parallel based on the print run, only by name. And that's where it was nice having it stay in alphabetical order when sorting by card number.

I'll use this 2021 Panini Certified Stars - #CS-21 - Lamar Jackson as the example for my next few questions since I'm pricing it for a listing right now.

If "card number" sorts by print run now, what's the difference between that and "popularity". Looking at the Jackson card, they sort the cards the same way now. Maybe I've always thought of "popularity" as the most searched, in the most collections, or most listed for sale on this site.

The last point I'll bring up is that when sorting alphabetically, it doesn't put the base card at the top. (see example again.) It's the third one down. I don't know enough about coding to know why it's below the "b" parallels, but above the "g".

I guess this is all good now while you can't filter out a specific parallel. (I replied in the other thread as well. It would be amazing to filter by parallel. For example, trying to view all of 2023 Select's silver parallel would be awesome.) But if that feature were ever implemented, the current sort would probably have to be adjusted.

I apologize for the novel. I'm a naturally curious person and I've worked in product management for 15+ years. So I love learning how things work and how I can use them better when I'm finally on the customer side of the product. lol
